| What is a Docent? |
Docents are volunteers
who conduct tours and interpret the buildings in Chicago's downtown
and surrounding neighborhoods on CAF tours. Our volunteers come from
all walks of life, many with little or no previous formal education
on the subject of architecture. |
| 2011
Docent Education Program
Applications are currently being accepted
for the Docent Education Program planned to begin in January, 2011.
The 2010 training program is already underway. Interviews for the
2011 class will start in October, 2010. Any applications received
after the October 15, 2010 deadline will be considered for the January,
2012 class.
There will be an “open house” informational meeting
about the Docent Education Program late this summer at CAF, date
to be determined. Please check the website in a few months for updated
information.

| The CAF
Docent Education Program incorporates interesting speakers, challenging
readings, written research, and hands-on experiences to give you
a solid background in Chicago architecture.
The weekly docent classes are held on either Thursdays or Saturdays
to accommodate busy schedules. All trainees (Thursday and Saturday
classes) learn the Historic
Downtown (south) Rise of the Skyscraper and Modern
Skyscrapers tours. |

| Who Should Apply? |
If you are enthusiastic
about architecture and volunteerism, consider becoming a CAF docent.
We suggest that you postpone the application
process if you fall under any of these categories:
- you have not taken the Historic
Downtown (south) Rise of the Skyscraper and Modern
Skyscrapers tours
- you are under 18 years of age
- you are a full-time student (undergraduate
or graduate)
- you cannot attend all the classes
- you are unable at this time to commit to the
training requirements outside of class time, including approximately
25 hours outside of class each week of homework, reading, building
observations, developing and practicing the tours; and completing
a final project

| The Application Process |
Applications can
be picked up at the Manager of Volunteer Services office in the Santa
Fe Building (224 South Michigan Avenue). You can also
print an application now and mail it to CAF with the $15 application
fee. Send in an application as soon as you know you’re interested
and ready to join the program. All applicants are encouraged to attend
an open house informational meeting before interviewing.
Applicants will be interviewed by a small group of CAF docents. Before
the interview, all applicants must take the Historic
Downtown (south) Rise of the Skyscraper and Modern
Skyscrapers tours.

| Docent Class Overview |
| The
Loop Module |
| All
docent trainees (Thursday and Saturday classes) will learn the Historic
Downtown (south) Rise of the Skyscraper and Modern
Skyscrapers walking tours. These are two-hour tours offered
almost every day of the year. Classes are held in the Elizabeth
Morse Learning Studio at CAF, 224 S. Michigan Ave. Each class begins
promptly at 9am and ends at 4:30pm. No class may be missed.
The classes consist of lectures, small-group exercises, and practice
tours. Lectures are given by local scholars, historians, practicing
architects, city planners, and construction professionals. Each
week of class includes reading assignments and written homework
due at the beginning of the next class. The course also includes
writing essays and completing a final project.
The total Docent Education Program is a seven-month commitment.
Trainees are required to attend all the classes during training.
Certification for the Historic
Downtown (south) Rise of the Skyscraper tour takes place after
completing the first semester of classes. Certification for the
Modern
Skyscrapers tour takes place after the completion of the second
semester. Dates for the 2011 training will be announced at the open
house events in the summer of 2010.
Graduation from the Docent Education Program will take place at
the end of the year when all first-year requirements have been fulfilled.
Required Coursework
The Docent Education Program is comparable to a graduate-level introduction
to the history of Chicago architecture. The homework assignments
are geared towards each trainee developing his or her own tours.
Homework outside of class consists of reading books and articles,
observing buildings and writing descriptions, and writing essays
on specific topics.
The estimated time spent outside class on homework, reading and
on-street practice is about 25 hours per week.
Each homework assignment will be read and commented on by a reader
who is a current CAF docent. There is a final tour observation requirement
outside of regular touring that must be completed by the end of
the first year as a docent.
Trainees are responsible for purchasing their own books (approximate
cost: $150). There is a one-time materials fee for photocopying
($30.00). Docent trainees are required to sign a contract agreeing
to pay a $350 fee should they voluntarily leave the program before
the first year of tours is completed.

Cost
There is no charge for the training. There is, however, a $15 application
fee and an additional $25 materials fee paid upon acceptance into
the program..
Tour Practice
Extra time will be needed outside of the classroom for walking the
route and practicing the tours. Each candidate will be assigned
a sponsor from the start of the program. Sponsors are current docents
who have volunteered to help mentor a trainee and help guide him
or her through the learning process. When the sponsor feels that
the trainees are ready, a certifier will test the final tour presentation.
The Tour Commitment After Class
Ends
Each docent trainee will be required to give 39 tour hours (the
equivalent of 13 public tours) in the first year. These 13 tours
will be divided evenly among the tours learned during the first
year. The 13 tours must be completed by December 31, of the year
the course is taken. Tours are scheduled based upon trainee’s
availability.
After the first year, all docents are required
to give 30 tour hours per year (the equivalent of 10 public tours).
Trainees interested in becoming certified to do other tours offered
by CAF (River Cruise, Highlights by Bus, etc.) must initially complete
the first-year requirements of training.
Benefits
Active docents receive many nice perks with the job, including free
CAF membership and a monthly newsletter and website which keep docents
informed about city and architecture-related happenings. Docents
are a self-governing body and members are elected to the Docent
Council. They may join numerous committees involving tour development,
quality and recognition, and docent education. Many docents take
advantage of our active continuing-education program including classes,
lectures, and out-of-town trips.
Unfortunately, parking and travel
expenses incurred by docents are not reimbursed or discounted.

| Become
a Visitor Services Volunteer |
| Interested
in getting more involved at CAF?
Visitor Services Volunteers (VSV) are needed for CAF's interpretive
visitor gallery, CitySpace, located in the Santa Fe Building. VSVs
provide a welcoming entrée to the Chicago Architecture Foundation
and introduce guests to the range of programs offered by CAF.
After a training program, VSVs are able to explain the exhibits
and offerings in CitySpace. VSVs also provide answers and/or referrals
to questions about Chicago architecture and architecture in general.
VSVs assist the Tour Dept. staff with the distribution of the Group
Tour System audio assist devices.
The successful volunteer should have: experience in serving the
public; a pleasant and engaging personality; basic computer skills
to support word processing and database management; and a keen interest
in Chicago architecture and a desire to learn more about it. Some
knowledge of architecture and of Chicago history and geography is
desirable.
CitySpace is open 9:30am to 5pm every day. Volunteers are needed
seven days a week for four-hour shifts during the mornings, and/or
three-and-a-half-hour shifts during the afternoons. There will also
be opportunities for occasional evenings and special events.
